Board games aren’t always about what is happening in front of you, on the game board. Paying attention to the other players can often help a lot, for many games do require a bit of hidden information on the part of any given player. Keeping a poker face can be a very important part of playing a smart game and knowing how to read another player can help your chances of winning. However, this isn’t the only case in which, during a board game, you will need skill at reading another player. Some board games are actually built around this activity. Physically getting your point across can become the skill in question.

Guesstures is a game based on acting different words or phrases out for teammates. In this game, players form into two teams and one player at a time is designated as the actor. During a turn, that player selects four cards from the deck. Each card has one easy and one difficult word on it, with the difficult words being worth more points. That player then has one minute to act out as many of those four words as is possible, scoring points for the team. After the minute is over, the points are calculated, and then the other team is given a chance to perform. Play continues back and forth between the teams until one team reaches a pre-determined amount of points, and all members of that team are considered the winners of the game. This game is a rather popular party game as it gives everyone the chance to participate and to laugh, allowing creative energy to flow freely through the room.

Another game that often requires its players to act in some fashion or another is the popular game Cranium. This game, first marketed in 1998, is billed as “The Game for Your Entire Brain.” When you play Cranium, you are competing against another team to best them in four different areas. The Creative Cat area tests your artistic skills, while the Data Head category will quiz your knowledge of trivia.

If a Word Worm area is landed on, vocabulary skills will be tested. However, if you land on the Star Performer, you will be forced to act out in some manner or another for your teammate to guess the answer to. There are a few different manners of performance required with this option, however, making it a very diverse option. If you choose a Cameo option, you must act out a word or a phrase with no speaking allowed, much like a traditional charades game. If you happen to select a Copycat card, the game becomes a little more tricky. The performer must then act like a certain celebrity or character without being allowed to say any proper names, nor can any questions be asked of the performer. If the teammate can guess who it is that the performer is imitating, the team scores the point. Humdinger, however, tests the team by forcing the performer to hum a popular tune for the teammate to guess. Cranium is an interesting approach to the classic formats of acting games, for it tests players in a different manner than most. Because of this, it is a fresh approach for any player looking to stretch their minds and imaginations while performing with a game.

If you’ve ever played a Hunter in World of Warcraft, you’re constantly on the lookout for a more powerful pet. Even though you may have become emotionally attached to that bear or panther you tamed at level 10, there are many creatures that make much better World of Warcraft pets than good old “Mr. Whiskers”.

Although some pets are better in certain situations than others depending on whether you want a tank or dps, there are a few animals that stand head and shoulders above the rest. Here’s a list of the Top 10 World of Warcraft Pets along with where they’re found, their ability modifiers, skills, and whether they make a better tank, dps, or general pet.

10. Nether Ray

Found in Outland, this WoW pet has a body much like a stingray with a long tail and two feathery plumes. It has crystalline growths and stripes running down its body, and all types are brightly colored. Nether Rays can be found in Netherstorm, Zangarmarsh, and Shadowmoon Valley (caster stats) with the Fen Ray from the Underbog as the only-non caster of this creature. Nether Rays get a big bonus to health (+10%), a smaller bonus to damage (+3%), but take a hit with well below average armor (-10%) and can be considered a hybrid dps/tank pet with the emphasis on dps. Their big “coolness” factor puts the Nether Ray at number 10 over other average to above average pets.

9. Wolf

Wolves are indigenous to many parts of Azeroth and are a very popular Hunter pet due to their large variety of skins and locations to find them at along with their Furious Howl and Dash skills. Wolves are average in damage and health but have above average (+5%).

8. Crocolisk

A crocolisk is a lizard-like creature, massive in length, and covered in thick, rough scales that run from the end of its tail to the tip of its maw. Mottled green in color with yellowish fangs, the beast is supported by six squat legs with webbed feet, each of which ends in short, black claws. Crocolisks are usually found near bodies of water and, in particular, in Durotar, Loch Modan, and the Wetlands. This World of Warcraft pet can learn Cower, Bite, and Growl but offer no unique pet skill. Some Hunters are annoyed by the hissing noise they make when sitting still, but their high armor (+10%) can make up for that and their lower health (-5%) if you’re looking for a tanking pet.

7. Gorilla

Gorillas are found only in Stranglethorn Vale, Feralas, and Un’Goro Crater and can learn Cower, Growl, Bite, and their unique skill Thunderstomp which inflicts area nature damage and causes a lot of threat. Gorillas are not very popular as a WoW pet due to their scarceness and fussy diet (fruit and fungus) but their unique skill, medium health bonus (+4%) and damage bonus (+2%) make them a good tough pet.

6. Wind Serpent

A brightly-colored, winged serpent with a feathered head – essentially a flying snake. Found primarily in Horde territory, the Wind Serpent has high damage (+7%) with average health and armor. What makes the Wind Serpent a special World of Warcraft pet is it’s lightning breath skill which deals a decent amount of ranged nature damage that scales with the hunter’s ranged attack power. Unless fighting monsters with low armor or innate nature resistance, a Wind Serpent will have the highest dps of any pet. Be careful though, a large number of Wind Serpents have caster stats if you tame them as a pet. Stick with those found in Barrens, Thousand Needles, and Feralas just to be on the safe side.

It’s interesting to see how a game console like the PS3 can make or break a giant company like Sony or how important it is to Microsoft to see the Xbox 360 succeed. We’re even seeing ads and commercials in our games, a sure-fire sign that we’re being taken serious. Hey, they wouldn’t do it if we weren’t important to them. But that’s not what I want to talk about. What I set out to do is discuss PC game downloads.

The way I see it, the gaming scene pretty much divides into PC gaming and console gaming. Consoles are proprietary and the games come on CDs, DVDs or BlueRay discs. You can also buy PC games on discs and order them online or get them from a store, but I much prefer to download video games from online. I mean, most of us do have broadband Internet access, so why not download games directly?

Well, there are some potential pitfalls. For example, due to my reputation as a geek and computer guru, everyone seems to call me when his or her PC has a problem. Most often, the problem turns out to be a virus. Worm or Trojan infestation, and it’s usually because they download stuff from all sorts of dubious places. So don’t be stupid. Stay with a reputable vendor who won’t mess up your system!

Another problem with a lot of the online video games stores is that they don’t let you try before you buy. Or if they do, it’s so complicated that you give up in frustration. You should have to read a manual and reconfigure your computer just to play a demo.

Finally, with all the gazillion gaming sites and stores out there, I prefer just one place that has it all. That way I know where to go and I won’t have to remember URLs or have dozens of logins to all sorts of little sites. Give me one big site that has all the PC video games I need. Price is another issue, and it goes without saying that a bigger site usually has better prices.

What matters most to me, though, is that I can try the games. And by that I don’t mean just a video or a limited demo or some screen shots. I want to play the whole game. Now the vendors have to get paid, of course, and so the compromise is that you get to download the game by clicking on a button and then play for an hour. That makes sense. If it’s a small game and you get hooked, you can then decide if you want to keep it by paying. If it’s a big game, an hour gives you enough time to figure out if you want to really get into it. Sounds fair to me.

So don’t waste time searching for full PC games downloads in all the wrong places.
